Where would larger tools have been stored in the wagon? I have seen "Chuckwagons" with them fastened to the outside. Would this be period correct for CW period? What larger tools would be good? Block and tackle ect????

Jim,
If you have big Conestoga type hounds your ax and spade can be on them with the blades stuck in staples. Otherwise I have seen an original where they cut out holes for the handles to pass through on the rear truck so basically they were under the floor boards at the rear of the wagon. Some freight wagons had staples inside the box. I have tried that, and I don't like it. I'm moving my ax to the front hounds and putting the spade under the wagon.

Mine is just a farm wagon. I would not want to be without an axe or a shovel, I think you have a good idea. thanks!

Saws, axes and larger tools Empty Ax and Shovel

Post  aWagonMaster Wed Jan 27, 2010 10:50 am

I have been carrying my ax in 2 places. My old broadhead ax is wedged between the stoop and front of the wagonbox. It is easy to grab in a hurry. The other ax is on the right side of the wagon. I attached a piece of leather to the wagon to slide the ax handle through. The head keeps it from falling through, the handle then rests on the back axle. I dont think I have it hanging straight down. The leather is snug to make it slow to remove and so far not lose.
The shovel is on the left of the wagon. It is under the iron supports that keep the box sides up and the step support. Then I tie a leather string on it to keep it from leaving.

Is that clear as mud? I could do pictures is needs be.
