Wooden Vs metal hames

Post  Jim Bishop on Tue Jan 12, 2010 9:18 pm

These are my set of wooden hames. I also have a set of metal hames "no picture yet". Which would be better for a civil war impression?

Hames

Jim,
Wooden hames were more common, but metal hames did exist. They were solid, not the sheet metal most of ours are. Your hames are a style that came in during the 1920s. That's what we used on our mules when I was a boy in the 40s and 50s. Right now I would not worry about style, you can replace hames easily enough.
If you do want to go to the right thing, I had a pair of nineteenth century originals which I sent to a woodworker to make a replica of and he died before I got them back. I believe there is a drawing of them in a 2002 article in Muzzleloader magazine. They are simple enough that anyone could make them with hand tools.
